Cornwall Fire & Rescue 19 – 33 Cornwall RFU President’s XV
Report by Stuart Hood
Cornwall Fire Service celebrated their 65th anniversary with a hard fought match against Cornwall Presidents XV Weds 16th November at Hayle RFC.
A lively first 15 minutes from the Fire Service led to them maintaining pressure in the Presidents half. Some strong defence from tight head Bailey Williams led to an elusive Jacob Ninnis breaking out of Cornwall’s half with play carried on by Jamie Prisk and Oakley Smitham deep into the Fire Service 22.
A series of penalties led to guest prop John Drew being shown a yellow card. With the Fire Service working hard in defence it took some hard running from St Austell wing Max Bullen and along with a number of strong forward carries, the evergreen Justyn Irons sidestepped his way in from 22 which he duly converted to leave Cornwall leading 0-7.
Cornwall Fire Service carried well and after applying some pressure at the end of the first half Redruth back row Kaiden Carne was caught at the ruck and shown a yellow card with the Fire Service crashing over for a converted try to level 7-7 at half time.
Cornwall started the second half strongly and after 50 minutes a break from Dan Tyrell led to St Agnes centre George Parry dancing under the posts with the conversion leaving the scores 7-14.
A third try was soon to follow after a storming run from captain Ben Taylor, led to the ball spinning wide and flying wing Max Bullen sliding in to leave Cornwall 7 – 19.
This was soon followed by rampaging prop Williams crashing over from a driven line out. 7 – 26.
The Fire Service were stung into action in the last 15 minutes diving over from a ruck in the corner to bring them back to 12-26.
Cornwall Presidents sealed the game in the last 5 minutes with Carne diving over under the posts with Irons duly converting to leave the score at 12-33.
However Cornwall Fire Service had the final word with a converted try to leave the score 19-33 to Cornwall Presidents XV.
