Four Cornish Lads represent SW in Regional games

Forty-five boys attended Hartpury college in early February for a south west under 18 selection.

These four lads from Cornwall were selected in the team of twenty-three players;

Dan Bennett Truro RFC (formally of St Austell RFC)

Kaea Griffiths Penzance & Newlyn RFC

Sam Vickery Launceston RC (Formerly of Bude RFC)

Idris Logan Helston RFC

They attended a 3 day England RFU development camp at Warwickshire university and ended with a 31 – all draw against the North counties development team. Sam Vickery scored in this game

On Sunday they all played London and south East at Cotham RFC and ended with a good win 22 – 12.

Congratulations to Dan, Kaea, Sam & Idris on their achievements, looking mighty fine with their SW Divisional Caps.

Today we turn the spotlight on Ann’s Pasties

The CRFU are delighted to welcome back Ann’s Pasties as one of our valued sponsors for 2024.

Here is a little background information on our pasty provider;

About Ann

All of the women in my mother’s Cornish family traditionally made pasties.

I learned to make pasties in an emergency, I was summoned by my mother, Hettie Merrick, a professional pasty-maker, to a Breton agricultural fair, where demand was dramatically and unexpectedly outstripping supply at a stall mother had set up. At the end of a day of pasty-making, I could crimp them as fast as my mother, which was the perfect confidence boost and eye opener into the fact that there was a business to be had producing a good Cornish pasty.

Soon afterwards I began making pasties for my neighbours, who’d bring gifts of fresh fish they’d caught or vegetables they’d grown, and who treated my living room like a waiting room, sitting around gossiping over cups of tea if the pasties hadn’t come out of the oven yet.

Inspired by the response, mother and I started selling our wares from a stall at the nearby market town of Helston. We soon found business good enough to graduate to a shop in Porthleven. But when juggling family and pasty shop became too much, my husband transformed the garage of our house at the Lizard into a pasty kitchen, where I was able to crimp with one eye on the family.

The business has since flourished, so much so that my son Fergus has stepped in to help keep up with the demand! The family recipe lives on through Fergus who makes a pasty so good even mother approves!

CRFU launch Cornwall Women’s Cup

A new Cup competition for Cornwall’s Women’s Cup is set to be launched next month.

Teams will compete in a Super 20 format with the whole competition taking place on Sunday 24th March at Truro RFC.

Cornwall name side to face the Royal Navy

Cornwall selectors have named an exciting side to take on the Royal Navy on Wednesday 28th February at Tregorrick Park, St. Austell, kick-off 7:30 pm.

The side will be captained by Fijian International Josh Matavesi, one of six Camborne players named in the squad.

Launceston also provide six players, whilst the home club, St. Austell have four players selected.

CRFU are most grateful to St. Austell RFC for staging this match and to our valued sponsors whose support is much appreciated.

Ground entry is £5 adults, under 16s free.

Please note there is no spectator parking at Tregorrick Park for this game. A park & ride will operate from Penrice Academy, the cost is £2, which will be charged with your admission entry. Details of this will published on this site next week.

Cornwall Clubs XV haul in the Hakes

St Ives RFC 27 – 33 Cornwall Clubs XV, Monday 5th February 2024

Coaches Graham Whitmore and Dan Sanderson pulled together a strong Cornwall Clubs squad selecting players from nine Counties 2 and 3 clubs to play St Ives as part of their Feast celebrations.

Playing against the wind Cornwall Clubs pressure led to a succession of St Ives penalties, leading to Perranporth fly half Justin Irons driving over under the posts to score which he duly converted to give Clubs an early lead 0-7

The reply from St Ives came after 15 minutes with some close carries by the forwards leading to their first try with a missed conversion in the windy conditions. 5-7.

Back row James Hall and Kaiden Karne along with Hayle centres Liam Wotton and Matt Vincent carried strongly and linked well as Cornwall opted to run the ball out of their 22.

St Ives made good use of the wind and their sustained pressure led to their second try, weaving through a broken defence, 10-7 to St Ives.

Cornwall responded swiftly with the strong running Bailey Williams and Morgan Gratrix plus good handling from the three-quarters. With the ball being moved from their own 22, a swift break from Wadebridge scrum half Ieuan Davies led to captain Aaron McPherson crashing over by the posts. This was quickly followed by more play out of defence and a barnstorming run from Veor second row Olly Reynolds bursting down the wing followed by quick hands through the backs giving Talan Daniels his first try in the corner. Justin Irons converted both tries to leave Cornwall clubs leading 21-10 at half time.

Just ten minutes into the second half Daniels burst through tackles on the left wing to give Perranporth speedster Kris Evans the opportunity to dot down with his first touch of the ball. Substitute scrum half Dan Jane converted, 10-28

Cornwall continued strongly and Hayle’s Matt Vincent cut through the St Ives defence to set up Daniels for his second try of the evening. 10-33

Down, but not out, St Ives rallied strongly in the last fifteen minutes, scoring three tries to bring them within a score with five minutes remaining, however Cornwall Clubs’ defence held strong for a well deserved victory 27-33.
