England Rugby Training Courses
Distribution – CB coaching lead, Referee Society Training Officer
Good afternoon,
I hope my email finds you safe and well.
This week we have released our training programme for August – November. This includes England Rugby Coaching and Refereeing awards, principles of scrummage, Kids First Contact and Kids First Tag. These courses are all available to book online. The attached guide, England Rugby Training Courses 22/23, is an excellent resource which we’d like CBs/Societies to add to websites as a first port of call for volunteers looking to engage in training. The guide provides information on all our resources, face to face and online and gives clear instruction on how to search and book.
Our primary means of promotion is via social media – we always try to tag in local CBs, societies and host venues where possible. By sharing the post or liking them it then widens the reach so please continue to support these posts and pages and follow if not already doing so. We will also, at times leading up to courses, use GMS to contact club volunteers direct.
Finally, a number of CBs and Societies have investigated the use of voucher codes to support volunteers. We no longer accept group booking or third-party payments for individuals – codes are a great way to bulk buy and then distribute to the game. The guides below provide information on how the CB/Society can buy these and allocate them against an individual and then how the individual uses them once assigned. If interested, please take some time to follow the guides and share with anyone you are supplying them to.

Thanks for your ongoing support and I hope you all have a great summer.
Many thanks,

Rich Kevern gains RFU Advanced Coaching Award
Cornwall’s U20 coach Rich Kevern has just been awarded his RFU Advanced Coaching Award.
The award is the culmination of a 12-month assessable course in which candidates must meet a number of criteria. Apart from several trips to Bristol for regional workshops, it involved E learning, webinars, on site assessment of coaching techniques and compiling a portfolio for assessment by the RFU.
Rich joins a small group of coaches in Cornwall who hold this level of coaching which was formerly the RFU Level 3 coaching award. Rich was part of the coaching team who oversaw Cornwall U20’s winning the Jason Leonard Cup the County Championship for U20’s in May 2022 for the first time.
The CRFU supported Rich in applying and completing the award. Rich said; – “I am delighted to have gained this further coaching award and would like to thank the CRFU for their invaluable support in the process and in paying the cost of the course”
Cornwall U20 Team Manager Colin Hatch said; -” Rich has put in a huge amount of work to gain this award, in addition to his coaching roles with Cornwall U20’s and Redruth, he has work and family commitments. It is vitally important that the representative teams have high class coaches to help develop players that come through the system. We are fortunate to have Rich as one of the U20 coaches for a number of years. He rightly deserved the support of the CRFU through the process and he has repaid that support by gaining this high-level coaching award.
Rich has played representative rugby for Cornwall at U20 and Senior level and replaced Matt Shepperd on the coaching team during the 2018 / 2019 season.
Also gaining the Advanced Coaching Award was Tom Kessell, not only a player at the Cornish Pirates but also the backs and attacks coach at Camborne RFC.
The CRFU President John Sumnall said; – “It is tremendous to see that Rich has gained this award and it is well deserved for the time and commitment he has put into the U20’s over the past few years. This award of coaching is not given lightly by the RFU, but it is important that we help develop high level coaches in Cornwall to keep our game progressing in the years to come and the total funding, by the CRFU of £1100, for this level demonstrates our commitment. A big well done too Rich on achieving this award”
England Rugby Mentoring Award
This course is being held at Bodmin RFC on Sunday 9th July. If you book up to 4 weeks prior to the course then it’s free.
Booking will need to be done via GMS, see course requirements.
Coaching & Referee Course needs for 2022
Dear Club Coaching / Referee Coordinator
In collaboration with CRFU I would like to invite a representative from your club to join an important
online meeting on January 25th at 7pm to discuss coaching and referee course wants and needs for
the upcoming year. This is your only opportunity to have an input into which courses are run in
Cornwall during 2022. As some of you will already be aware the way that course are planned and
delivered has changed recently. However I still want to make sure that every coach or referee in
Cornwall has the opportunity to attend courses locally to them so that they are able to develop, to
meet the needs of your players and clubs.
This meeting will be your chance to find out more information about the content of the courses
being offered, to express your interest in hosting courses or to suggest where courses might be
needed. I would also like to have the opportunity to make sure that every club in Cornwall is aware
how important it is to have an active coaching and/or refereeing coordinator in place so that
information is reaching all those that it is intended for.
If you follow the link below it will give you some information of what the RFU course offer looks like
at the moment, please take a few minutes to watch the video that it contains. It also has
information and links to some free courses that your volunteers can complete online:

Can I please ask that you respond to this email and let us know if you can attend. Can I also stress
again that this will be the only opportunity to influence when and where courses are run in your
County this year so please ensure your club is represented.
To join the meeting please follow this link: Click here to join the meeting (on Teams)

England Rugby Advanced Coaching Award
Bookings are now open for the England Rugby Advanced Coaching Award (previously Level 3) pre requisite Workshops for the 2022/2023 Season. The purpose of this course is to develop self-reflecting advanced practitioners with a clear understanding of what drives, influences and supports them to get better. The Advanced Award is a yearlong course, which is competence assessed. For coaches to achieve competence, there will be a significant expectation concerning the volume of work and requirements to demonstrate the competencies, above and beyond their normal coaching roles. Before engaging in the prerequisite Workshops, please reflect on your readiness to complete the Award alongside existing commitments.
The pre requisite Workshops consist of the below:
Workshop 1 (On Demand)- to be completed by 31st December 2021- https://bit.ly/ERACA-W1
The first Workshop will be delivered On Demand from the 1st November 2021- 31st December 2021 via Workcast. This means that you can complete the Webinar at any time between the 1st November 2021 and 31st December 2021. Please ensure that you register for this course via the GMS Booking link above. Failure to do so, may mean that the Workshop is not added to your GMS profile and will prevent you from accessing the full Award Course. We will be collating a list of all those that complete the Webinar via Workcast on 31st December, so please ensure you complete this Workshop by then to progress to Workshop 2.
This first Workshop will introduce you to key differences between the England Rugby Coaching Award and the England Rugby Advanced Coaching Award. We will also look at the course format and structure to give you an understanding of what you might expect from the full Award Course.
Workshop 2 (Live Sessions)- in January & February 2022
All those that complete Workshop 1 by 31st December 2021, will be notified of the Workshop 2 dates and booking links in the New Year 2022. These session will be live and delivered via Microsoft Teams. Once again, individuals will need to ensure that they register via GMS for this Workshop to be added to their GMS profile.
Workshop 2 will introduce some of the course content, including Game (Tactical) Understanding, Co Coaching and Observation. This session will give you an idea of the type of content delivered and enable you to make a decision about your readiness to engage with the level of content and understanding required of an Advanced Coach.
England Rugby Advanced Award 2022-2023 Bookings (£1000)
Following the conclusion of the pre requisite Workshops, all eligible candidates will be contacted directly with booking links to access the full Award Course. Please note, that in addition to the prerequisite Workshops above, candidates will also need to demonstrate that:
– They have held a Level 2/ ERCA for 3 years or more- completed prior to 1st September 2019.
– Have attended both Advanced Workshop 1 (Nov/Dec 2021) and Advanced Workshop 2 (Jan/Feb 2022).
– Be in an active coaching role (in England) with the same team across a whole season, spanning the course cycle with tasks set in mind.
– Acceptable environments:
o Age Grade
o Youth & Schools
o Adult Community
o Talent Pathway
o Adult Performance
The above pre requisites to access the full Award Course are not negotiable and will need to be demonstrated on an individual’s GMS profile.
We wish you the best of luck with your continued Coaching Journey.
Kind Regards,
RFU Game Development Team

Lineout Course – In danger of cancellation!
Important update regarding these courses and others, please note.
We today, 30th July, received the following e-mail from Wayne Reed, which we find rather disturbing to say the least.
“I know you can’t force coaches to attend courses but I just wanted to make you aware that both the Lineout courses at Wadebridge and Redruth are in danger of being cancelled! Only 5 coaches registered at Wadebridge and 7 at Redruth.
I have tried everything possible to generate interest including emailing every coach in Cornwall and every club secretary to make sure the information is being received.
The courses will remain open until next week but will be cancelled a week before they are due to run if numbers don’t improve. I am on leave for a week now so will keep fingers crossed.
On a positive note both the coaching and refereeing courses being run at Callywith have started receiving bookings!”
Guys, the ball in in your court. The phrase use it or lose it is often bounded about but in this case is very true. The CRFU take a dim view of the apparent lack of interest/enthusiasm being shown by our clubs, there has been virtually no rugby for 18 months and surely clubs need to get coaches on courses???????……..This needs to change, Wayne is putting in a lot of effort to try and organise courses for YOU, so please support him. We would rather clubs did the right thing but if needs be we as a CB will be forced to take action!
Venues have been selected with two in Cornwall, Redruth & Wadebridge, to deliver these courses. Clubs in the North and East of the Duchy may find one of the Devon locations easier to access. Please book your places via GMS.
