Newquay & Perranporth U15s will be nervously looking over their shoulders going into the XGirl Cup knock-out finale in April, after momentum proved to be firmly with the chasing pack at Truro RFC on Sunday as the league stages reached completion.
Having led the table all season, the gap between themselves and their rivals all but disappeared as Bude won all four of their matches, with the leaders failing to gain a losing bonus point against both Bude and Camborne, who themselves are finishing the season in fine form.
Also peaking at the right time are St Austell, who have found a strong understanding on the pitch with recent partners Penzance and who put five tries past Bude before defeating Camborne themselves. Truro caused problems for both Bude and St Austell/Penzance, demonstrating their increasing competitiveness, whilst it was a first appearance at the XGirl Cup for Wadebridge’s newly set up girls section who joined in with Launceston to book their involvement in the knock-out finals at the end of the season.
Seedings for the knock-out stage are based on the league table positions, so nothing is decided yet and on current form every team will fancy their chances of causing some upsets on the final day!
Meanwhile on the bottom pitches the standard of play in the U13s was skyrocketing, with the highest quality of team play seen at this level for years providing some exceptional matches. Whereas attacking play was the dominating force at the opening stage, now teams were showing robust defences and good continuity going through the phases with one team conceding only 7 tries across their 4 games.
Redruth Water and Camborne/Penzance drew in the opening fixture of the day, and these pair of teams then remained undefeated throughout. Both overcame an equally impressive Redruth Fire, whose 7-0 win over Bude was one of the most best matches of the event, given that Bude put 16 tries past their other opponents.
Liskeard were a single try versus Launceston from finishing unbeaten themselves; Launceston were the only team to score 4 tries past Camborne; Truro restricted everyone but the free-scoring Bude to just 2 tries; and the new Wadebridge U13s joined the Perranporth girls and held Liskeard to a very creditable draw as well as pushing Camborne all the way as well.
Thanks to Truro RFC for being such excellent hosts, and to all the volunteers both on and off the pitch.

The Cornwall Rugby Football Union Disciplinary Committee is extremely concerned regarding the number of cases of Match Official Abuse already reported to the Panel this season which is just 12 weeks old.
Abuse of Match Officials (including non-appointed/volunteer touch judges) on and off the field is totally unacceptable and shall not be tolerated.
As we are sure you are aware, there is a desperate shortage of match officials to cover all the matches played across Cornwall.
It is becoming increasingly difficult for the Referees’ Society to not only recruit new members but also to retain current members, and Abuse of Officials (from players and spectators) is given as one of the causes of this.
Referees and non appointed /volunteer touch judges freely give up their free time throughout the rugby season because of their love and support for the game and to ensure that rugby can be played at weekends for the enjoyment of players and spectators.
Naturally, we should all be encouraging and supporting our Match Officials at every opportunity, as without them there would be no rugby!
This support must come from players, coaches and spectators alike – you have a responsibility for the behaviour of all your members.
With this in mind, for all Proven cases involving Match Official Abuse arising from matches on or after 1st January 2022, the CRFU Disciplinary Panel will consider a minimum automatic aggravation of 1 week (1 match for Age Grade Under 18 & below) over and above the RFU Sanctions as below and appropriately severe sanctions against spectators and or clubs in respect of Match Official abuse by spectators or non playing members of clubs.
Clubs are reminded that they should ensure that abuse to match officials does not take place and should take all necessary steps to prevent this.
Where an incident of match official abuse by a spectator is reported the matter must immediately be reported to the CRFU Discipline Secretary and that all such cases will be heard by the CRFU Discipline Panel. Clubs will not receive agreement that they may deal with such matters internally. This will come into force for all incidents from Saturday 12th March 2022.
Law 9.28
A player must not verbally abuse a Match Official. Verbal abuse includes, but is not limited to, abuse based on: religion, colour, national or ethnic origin, sexual orientation.
Sanctions:
Low-end: from 6 weeks/matches
Mid-range: from 12 weeks/matches
Top-end: from 18+ weeks/matches
Max: 52 weeks/matches
At the end of the current season the situation will be reviewed by the Committee again, when we will hopefully be able to look back on an improvement regarding this issue and hope that we will not need to take any further action..
Will all clubs and schools please ensure this message is circulated to all players and supporters at all levels.

Aaron currently plays for Newquay Hornets RFC was recently presented with his U20’s cap by the CRFU President John Sumnall at his home club on their vice Presidents’ Day.
Aaron earned his tie on his first appearance for the U20’s back in February 2019. He was a regular squad member until the last game when Covid 19 struck in the away victory against Gloucestershire in March 2020. During the 2019/2020 season Arron also captained the Cornwall U20’s.
Had it not been for the pandemic he would have potentially made several further appearances and had his cap presented at one of the games in front of his teammates!
The CRFU President congratulated Aaron on his achievement and wished him well in his future rugby career.

Storms, traffic jams, floodlight failures, locked-up venues. It’s certainly been a memorable couple of trial sessions, but at the end of it all the following 30 girls have been selected to represent Cornwall this season! Well done to all those who have made the cut: emails will be following regarding what comes next. Congratulations!
Those players who trialled but fell just short of making the squad, we don’t want your involvement to end yet though. In recent years we’ve kept the door open to training sessions for players to continue to train with the squad and improve their skills and game understanding and this year is no different: indeed, as part of a formal Cornwall Development Squad we invite all trialists to all county training sessions, including this Friday’s session at Truro College. The Cornwall coaching team can’t wait to start working with all of you.
A massive thanks to everyone involved in running the trials too: none of this would happen without all your continued support and effort.

U15s v Bristol Schools
Well done One and All!
A very successful day at Weston Hornets RFC allowed 120 Cornish under 15 players the chance to wear the ‘Black and Gold’ for the first time in their representative rugby journey.
The boys have trained at the CSP satellite training centres since they were under 14s, developing skills and game knowledge at the Monday night sessions and this was their first chance to play in the 5 match day squads.
For the record the results were 1 drawn game, 1 win and 3 losses. However, it was the pride in playing for their county and using their developing skills against strong opposition 150 miles from home that shone through during the day.
The combination of support from CRFU and Exeter Chiefs is crucial in enabling this opportunity for CSP events such as this for young age group players. They are the future of our game. However the support from families and friends is just as important to the boys….getting them to the venue was ‘quite testing’ given the weather and lots of other commitments.
At this time, it is relevant to point out that this fixture and many youth representative rugby events are a legacy of Benji Thomas. The Bristol coaches spoke fondly of Benji’s ambition and work to ensure that Cornish boys got a fair chance to play the game to the highest level possible. He probably would have been proud of what the present cohorts of players have achieved so far.
There are two more events scheduled for Under 15s. The first is a festival at Camborne prior to the Cornwall game v Crawshays on 30th April and the second is fixtures with Devon planned for early May. More details will appear on this website over the next few weeks.

There was an excellent turnout at the Eden Project on Sunday as the CRFU were guests of the Eden Project. Players and their families were treated to a buffet meal and access to the attraction.
The event also saw some good ground plans put in place ahead of this season’s Bill Beaumont campaign as well as the prestigious friendly game in April against Capt. Crawshay’s XV.
As well as familiar faces from previous campaigns there were also some exciting new players keen to show their talent in the black and gold shirt.
CRFU Chairman Dave Saunter welcomed everyone to the event and his welcome was echoed by David Rowe from the Eden Project, who’s logo will once again feature on the Cornwall shirt this season.
Following the usual housekeeping information for the squad and training plans laid out by Marek Churcher, there was an opportunity to recognise some of the award winners in last season’s Mitsusbishi Volunteer Recognition Awards, namely Ian Grantham (St. Austell RFC) and both Joss Pascoe and Orlando Davies (both Truro RFC), presentations were made by CRFU President John Sumnall.
John went on to say that despite many hurdles to overcome, with some goodwill and hard work we had a county championship to look forward to this season and it was down to us to make a success of it and he felt confident that Cornwall would once again prove to be a shinning light in the Bill Beaumont Cup.
Members of Trelawny’s Army Supporters Club were also present and they are delighted to confirm that they will be sponsoring the match balls for not only Cornwall’s home games this season but also for the home games involving Cornwall Women in the Gill Burns Cup and the upcoming Jason Leonard Cup quarter-final to be played on March 20th.
A raffle , featuring some excellent prizes courtesy of the Eden Project, raised the fine sum of £200:00 for the RFU Injured Players Foundation.

Cornwall U15 Representative Rugby 21st February 2022
Cornish U15 boys will have the opportunity to pull on the black and gold shirt as they start
their journey along the representative pathway.
The CSP satellite Monday night centres have been active through the Autumn and Spring
terms with coaches extending the skills of this age group. The number of players reflects the
interest in rugby through schools and clubs and the skills centres. 120 boys will be making
the journey to Weston Hornets RFC to play in 5 teams against Bristol Schools on 21st
February which is the Monday of half term.
Rich Phillips has coordinated the event so boys have the chance to wear black and gold.
The first 3 games will kick off at midday with the final two games at 2.00pm. The boys will
wear their club shorts and socks but will be provided with a match shirt for their game.
If all goes well there will be two more opportunities for u15s with a festival planned to
coincide with the senior Cornwall fixture against Crawshays at Camborne in April and then
games against Devon scheduled for May.
All being well these boys will continue their rugby journey into U16 County rugby and the
U17s and U18s game with players having the opportunity to go on to play for South West
representation and then U20 rugby in the Jason Leonard Championships.
Cornwall U16 representative Rugby March 2022
Following the first opportunities last December for Cornwall boys to play for their county
against Devon there are fixtures scheduled for 6th March.
Five teams will be selected from clubs, schools and the central group that meets at Truro
College on Tuesday nights.
Two teams will be travelling to Bath and a further three will play Bristol Schools at Truro
College with games kicking off at 11.30am, 12.45pm and 2.00pm.
The large number of boys that have trained at this age group shows the strength and interest
in rugby in our County.
Rich Phillips will coordinate the contact of players to ensure that Cornish boys can continue
their journey through representative rugby and rise to the challenge that County rugby
provides.
A further opportunity to play County rugby for U16s is scheduled for Sunday 27th March
when it is planned to play fixtures in Cornwall against Somerset.
