Cornwall Under 20s ready for Lancashire tussle

CORNWALL RFU UNDER 20 COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP 2020 The Jason Leonard Cup Semi-final.

Cornwall Rugby Football Union (CRFU) Under 20 County Championship campaign 2022 continues as they take on Lancashire in the semi-final of the Jason Leonard Cup on Sunday 17 April. The team face a 750-mile round trip and play the hosts Lancashire at Wigan RUFC at Wingates Road Wigan.

CRFU President John Sumnall said “Following a tremendous performance in the quarter-final v Hertfordshire, Cornwall must travel on Easter weekend to Lancashire. I would like to record my thanks for the effort that the coaches, medics, backroom staff have put in throughout the season which has brought about this semi-final appearance. It is fantastic to see so many different clubs represented over the season, and we thank them for their support to enable these fixtures to be played”

Cornwall started their campaign with a narrow win over local rivals Devon 25 – 24, before travelling to Dorset & Wilts where they were comfortable winners 7 – 64 which meant they topped their pool and gained a home quarter-final. The quarter-finals were played at Camborne RFC with a home win 36 -17 which sees Cornwall earn an away semi-final.

Coach Rich Kevern said – “We are now one of only four teams left in this competition for this year, and you do not get any second chances, so the guys must perform. Following the win against Hertfordshire we have had a few training sessions and the guys need to be ready from the off for this important game. We know that northern teams normally have big packs and will try to intimidate us, but the guys know what they are up against and must go out there and perform.  All the remaining teams have won or been runners up in there qualifying pools as well as won their quarter-finals, so there are no easy games. Everybody involved would also like to record our thanks to the CRFU management board for their continued support to enable us to progress within this competition”

The winner of this game will play the winners of Kent v Yorkshire, a date, location, or time has not been released yet by the RFU!!

Cornwall Captain Ethan Pearce-Cowley said, – “We’re aware as a team of the pressure that we’ll face in this semi-final. That’s just a given considering the competitiveness in the last 4. But I don’t have any doubt that our team is ready to dig in away from home and do what’s required. We’re a strong team and regardless of the home or away turf I’m confident about the ability in our team.’’

Lancashire won their away pool game v Cheshire 17 – 29, their home game against Yorkshire was not played and they therefore had an away quarter-final v East Midlands which they won again 17 – 29 to take them into the semi-finals.

The CRFU Hon Sec Terry Williams said, -” The competition this year has had some challenges for the CRFU as the RFU have cut funding for the pool stages and have initially said there will be no additional funding to assist in travelling or hotels costs. Therefore, the CRFU management board have had to look very closely at all expenditure, with the rising fuel costs and the game being played on Easter Sunday and with an away draw in the semi-final has certainly added to the pressures we face”

Supplemental Pot: Club Support Fund 2021/2022
During the 21/22 season, the Supplemental Pot ticket fund was suspended due to the pandemic and £400,000 was allocated from the Community Game budget for a needs-based Club Support Fund (CSF). The purpose of this fund is to support those clubs that are significantly affected by the non-payment of the Supplemental Pot. Eligibility info and claim form here.
Reminder of May Deadline For International Ticketing Allocation
The deadline of 20 May is fast approaching for clubs to enter their non RFU league fixtures in the Game Management System. By doing adding your 15 a side fixtures played, will help your indicative allocation sent out later this summer.

Valued Volunteer Daubroy Delahunty get’s honoured at Twickenham

Honda Volunteer of the Year Award, Wadebridge Camel’s Daubroy Delahunty shares his day at Twickenham

Volunteers are one of the most valuable assets within the rugby community. Often offering time, effort, experience, and support to continue the community game. The Honda Volunteer of the year award helps thank those who dedicate their time and effort to the continuation of the sport. Rugby union has a long and proud tradition of thanking volunteers. Encouraging these traditions at clubs and Constituent Bodies helps maintain the ethos of the game we love. Ahead of the Guinness Six Nations home fixtures, each Constituent Body is invited to nominate a volunteer to attend an England home fixture with a guest of their choice.

The day started with a welcome and a guided tour around the rugby museum. After having ago at the various interactive activities and showcasing my vertical jump or lack thereof, we continued with a pitchside tour, visited the coach’s area and royal seating and were met by the RFU president, who thanked the collective for their continued work within the community.

After visiting the president’s lounge and pre-lunch introductions, we had a lovely three-course meal that Alan Milliner, RFU council member, hosted. I was lucky enough to be invited to welcome the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge into Twickenham along with three other people. After grabbing a quick pint, we arrived just in time for the kick-off to watch the game.

After the final whistle, we meet up again with Alan to discuss the game and experience the Fan Zone and debrief on the game as you often do. After listening to live music, we departed to the Twickenham Marriot.

The work volunteers do isn’t for the plaudits or recognition it’s simply because the individual is passionate to help put back into the game that has helped develop them.

Being invited to HQ to participate in the Honda Volunteer of the year award scheme was a humbling experience. I appreciate there are so many outstanding volunteers out there who I was representing from fellow volunteers at Wadebridge and across the county.

The effort and attention to detail those at the RFU put into the day were incredible, from the hotel to the schedule nothing was left to chance. The other volunteers and myself were thoroughly catered to and looked after. I must also thank Alan and Max for their hospitality and generosity throughout the day.

Being able to represent CRFU at the home of English Rugby and to welcome royalty is something I will always treasure.

I would encourage every club to take this opportunity to nominate and put people forward for a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Cornwall Under 16s undefeated against Somerset

A tremendous day of rugby at Redruth last Sunday when we fielded three Under 16 sides against our old friends from Somerset resulting in two Cornish wins and a draw. Well done to all the young lads involved and to the coaches and parents.

Cornwall Women announce squad for Gill Burns Cup

Cornwall Women coaching staff have announced their enlarged squad for this season’s Gill Burns Cup.

It’s the first time in three years due to covid that the Cornish Women’s Senior side have been able to have a competitive representative fixture.

Cornwall will kick-off their campaign on Sunday 8th May against Dorset & Wilts Women at Launceston’s Polson Bridge Ground kick-off 2pm.

They travel to Grasshoppers RFC in Isleworth to play Middlesex Women the following Sunday before completing their pool games at home to Somerset Women on Sunday 22nd May at Hayle RFC kick-off 1 pm.

Entry to the two home games is free and refreshments will be available on the day.

No doubt clubs will have noted the latest Community Game Update, for ease of reference it is re-printed below;

International Ticketing Allocation Reminder
890 clubs to date have been entering fixtures that are not RFU Competitions into the Game Management System to help with indicative Guinness Six Nations ticket allocation. We would encourage clubs to enter theirs so they don’t miss out.

So remember to include your Kernow League fixtures, Cup fixtures and other games you intend to play to increase your club’s allocation for next season.
